Roy Veneracion

Roy Veneracion (b. 31 July 1947, Manila, Philippines) is a major Filipino painter whose practice moves across abstraction, figuration, symbolism, and layered mixed visual languages. He studied at the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts, where he trained formally while developing a strong independence from fixed stylistic categories.

Over the course of his career, Veneracion became widely associated with syncretism in Philippine contemporary art—a mode of working that brings together different images, techniques, references, and painterly approaches within a single body of work. His paintings often resist repetition, favoring reinvention, experimentation, and the coexistence of multiple visual vocabularies.

He was recognized with the Cultural Center of the Philippines Thirteen Artists Award in 1990, and his work is represented in important Philippine collections, including the National Museum of the Philippines.
