Untitled I
Koichi Maruyama, 10 × 17.5 in, Ink and acrylic on washi paper
Artist Information
Koichi Maruyama is a Japanese abstract artist based in Osaka whose practice centers on ink and washi. Working with sumi, handmade paper, brushes, inkstones, and other traditional materials, he explores states that cannot be directly seen—conflict, rest, struggle, calm, and the shifting interior life of the mind.
Born in Osaka in 1959, Maruyama began painting abstract works in ink in 1998. His approach places great importance on the subtle differences produced by materials, and on drawing out the fullest expressive potential of ink on paper through careful combinations of brush, ink, stone, and Japanese paper.
For Chelra Art’s clients, his works offer a contemplative visual language and a strong sense of material presence, qualities well suited to collectors, refined residences, and thoughtfully designed spaces.
