Artist Information

Benjie Cabangis

Benjie Cabangis is a Filipino abstract painter whose work is shaped by decades of sustained practice, teaching, and engagement with contemporary Philippine art. His paintings often balance structure and atmosphere, bringing together geometric order, layered surfaces, and luminous passages of color into compositions that feel both meditative and spatially alive.

Cabangis earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts, major in Painting, from the University of the Philippines in 1978. He later became a longtime faculty member of the UP Diliman College of Fine Arts, where he served as Chair of the Department of Studio Arts and as curator of the UP Fine Arts Gallery’s Corredor Gallery. He was conferred the title of Professor Emeritus by the University of the Philippines.

In 1978, Cabangis was named a CCP Thirteen Artists Awardee, recognizing him among the important young artists of his generation. In 1999, he received the Gawad Chanselor as the University of the Philippines’ Outstanding Visual Artist. His 2023 exhibition Reelin’ in the Years, presented at Parola: UP Fine Arts Gallery, was identified as his 31st solo exhibition.

For Chelra Art’s clients, Cabangis’s works offer clarity, balance, and painterly depth—qualities well suited to collectors, residences, and thoughtfully designed interiors.
